Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disabling disorder that develops after exposure to a traumatic event. It is characterized by intrusive thoughts, nightmares, and flashbacks; avoidance of reminders of the trauma; negative cognitions and mood; hypervigilance and sleep disturbance.
Equine-assisted therapy utilizes therapeutic interactions with horses to promote emotional healing. Unlike traditional psychotherapy, this approach focuses on nonverbal communication, emotional mirroring, and physical engagement. It fosters a safe, relational environment that supports recovery from trauma. Studies have shown that equine-assisted therapy may help reduce symptoms of PTSD, enhance emotional regulation, and build greater interpersonal trust.
